Zoe at one week
Zoe will be a week old in another 17 hours. Where did the week go? It's all been a blur of nursing, changing diapers, naps, and just staring at our beautiful child. We are having a great (although sleepy) time. She consumes every minute of our day, and we're perfectly happy to let her.
We had our first pediatrician appointment on Friday; her weight was up two ounces and everything looked fine. Just like the residents mentioned in the hospital, the doctor noted how strong she seems. We've noticed it too. She enjoys using her legs to try to flip herself up over our shoulders, and I believe she could do it, too! She can lift her head when we put her face down on a blanket. She's a tough cookie. It's also fun to be able to show Jack what I was feeling when I was pregnant - she kicks and squirms in the same ways she did in utero.
She's so small - barely any of the clothes we have actually fit her, but we know this will remedy itself soon enough. When I see six and nine-month old babies on TV, I can hardly believe that she will be that big someday. Her hair sticks straight up and out like she stuck her finger in the light socket. When she's awake and gazing at us with that hair, wide eyes, and making faces, we can't keep from laughing; it's all so cute.
The cats have responded to this alien invasion with varying levels of head-scratching, sorrow, and pouting. They know she's not a cat, so they don't feel threatened (in fact, they full-on ignored her for the first few days), but they seem a little bewildered by the fact that we are paying them less attention and don't appear to sleep at night anymore. They know that she's the New Alpha, and they seem almost afraid of her sometimes. I think they are confused more than anything.
Not much else to report other than we (the humans, at least) are very happy. This cyclical, exhausted, comfy cocoon of the three of us won't last long - Jack is already grieving over one week of his paternity leave being over - so we are mentally trying to drink it all in as much as possible.
On that note, time to end this blog post - it's already time to wake her up for her next meal.
