Hospital Update: Making Progress

If this had been the real thing, Katheryn would have had the baby by now.  It's been nearly 48 hours since Katheryn first started feeling pain, and the last two days have pretty miserable for her. If you've ever had a kidney stone, or similar malady, you know the pain never really goes away. It just fluctuates from very painful to excruciating.  

The pain medication that Katheryn has been on has made her rather loopy and given her a considerable amount of nausea. They've given her medication for the nausea, which in turn, makes her itchy.  For that they give her Benadryl, which makes her even more groggy. 

Unfortunately, she can't really sleep due to the constant beeping of the IV machine and monitors, as well as constant checks on her and the baby's vitals.  Basically, its been two days of pain with very little sleep; a miserable ordeal, and one that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

On Friday morning, Katheryn was given a renal ultrasound, but the doctors were unable to see anything so it's anybody's guess as to how big and how far along the stone might be.  Due to the pregnancy, they're not able to X-ray or use a cat-scan, which are far better at detecting stones.

Friday evening was the worst, I think. Katheryn's blood pressure dropped a bit and the baby's heart rate dipped a bit from her normal 150 BPM to around 120 BPM. Clearly, BGB was starting the feel the effects of the medication and the lack of activity.  Katheryn was also running a slight fever, and the pain was as bad as ever. It seemed like no progress was being made.

As of Saturday morning, however, things appear to be improving slightly. Katheryn's blood pressure is almost back to normal, as is BGB's heart rate.  The fever is also gone. The best sign, though, is that Katheryn also passed a small stone. We don't know at this point if it was just a fragment or the real deal. She's still in a lot of pain, so we suspect there is more to come, but it's a promising development.  

Katheryn was also switched from the IV administered to an oral pain medication.  Oral pain medications take longer and are not as effective, but if she's able to manage then she could be sent home; another promising sign.
